Switzerland, Valais in Winter

This breathtaking country is so much more than just it’s capital city. The canton of Valais is in both the French and German speaking part of Switzerland and has it’s fair share of natural wonders. These are just a few of the incredible places to visit in this winter wonderland.

Les 4 Vallées Skiing Region. This ski region has over 400km of ski slopes, catering to everyone from beginners (like me) to professional freestyle and olympic skiers. Verbier is undoubtably the most popular of the big five towns in the resort, however, it is possible to ski between all of the towns, even for relatively new skiers. The resort also hosts the Xtreme Verbier Freeride World Tour every year.

I saw snow for the first time when I was 19, in Germany. A week later I was in Valais at the Thyon ski resort trying skiing for the first time. Though I didn’t instantly love skiing, I loved the mountains, the snow and the atmosphere so I was pretty determined to get skiing. I am very lucky to have had patient teachers and after being back a few more times, I am pretty confident on the slopes.

Mont Fort. Possibly my favourite part of the 4 Vallées Ski Resort is Mont Fort. At 3330m high, Mont Fort has an incredible view over the surrounding mountains and from the lookout you can see The Matterhorn, Dent d’Hérens, Grand Combin and Mont Blanc. Two cable cars bring you up and if your skill level is high enough, you’re able to ski down. Maybe one day…

Leukerbad. Leukerbad is a town in the German speaking part of Valais. The drive to Leukerbad from the highway is quite breathtaking as the mountains are much steeper here. The road climbs up the valley overshadowed by gigantic rocky cliffs on both sides. In Leukerbad, which sits at 1400m, there is a thermal pool called Leukerbad Therme. The complex has ten thermal baths which range from 28°C to 42°C and are fed by underground mineral rich water sources. Entry is quite pricey but worth it to relax in the many pools/spas and take in the view.

Valais is a skiers winter wonderland. This region takes my breath away every time.

Success! You're on the list.
